Showreel 2014

A showreel of my work throughout my time at Falmouth Uni!

Whilst studying on the Animation and Visual Effects course Emma worked as a producer on two major projects; Crocodile Tears and Luminocity. In her free time she also helps co-run a projection mapping group called Twisted Vision, and creates motion graphics for stage designs at music events in and around Cornwall.

Crocodile Tears
Winner of the Royal Television Society Undergraduate Animation Award at the Student Television Awards 2014. A 2D animated short film about two crocodile con-artists who use sympathy to trick people out their money. Director: Darren Smith. Producer: Emma Walsh.

Luminocity:
A documentary following the development of a projection mapping installation which took place at the Fish Factory, Falmouth. The installation combines various styles of animation (2D, 3D, Live action, Stop motion) to visually explore industrialisation whilst being projected onto a city scape model.
Director: Nick Turner. Producer: Emma Walsh. Art Director / Motion Graphics: Freddie Horton. Motion Graphics: Ben Knights. Colour Grader: Toby Ellis. Set Builder: Chris Wootton.

Pre: Stairs Animation 2

The second attempt of my stairs animation section for my pre production project. This time i'm using reference footage of myself running up some stairs. Much happier with this animation, although would like to adjust the colours to make it similar to my original style.

Oh yes and i've forgotten to put the eyes in! Woops!

Pre: Animation test

The first animation test for my pre production project. I'm not happy with how my animation, I hope to collect some footage of myself running up stairs to try and make it better! I couldn't find much to reference apart from Muybridge. I will also be experiment with colouring her in.

Pre: Concept Art

The first pieces of concept artwork:

1. 'Jenny' sitting bored in a cluttered office. I still need to add the character into the second piece, I will do this when I know how I'm going to colour it.

2. This is where Jenny has transfered to work on the cruise ship.

3. Jenny on her third call out. Unhappy with the drunk tourist. The second piece is just to see what the cut out effect looks like, it may not be the actual style.

Pre: More Characters

Below are a few designs for the other characters:

Pre: Art Development

To try and get the art style right, I've researched Niko Pirosmani and Alfred Wallis. I choose Wallis because apart from being a local artist, he did a lot of work on boats. I looked at Pirosmani because he's got some really nice animal styudies. He was also really useful for character design. Below are my studies of both artists artwork.

Niko Pirosmani:

Alfred Wallis:

Pre: Character Development

I really enjoy drawing character designs, so I've done quite a lot of this! I've shaped her to look a bit like a bear as fables usually include personified animal characters. Maybe this is to make it more interesting for children to listen to or imagine. I definitly enjoy drawing them! I started by looking into the main character; who i've decided to call 'Jenny'.

Then I chose the one I liked the most and created some action shots of her moving and played with a few variations:

Next I made my first ever character turn around sheet, I'm quite happy with this one:

Below are colour tests. My art style is 19th Century Naive Art, so this was to see which one fit this the best. (Left to right: photoshop cut out textures, acrylic, watercolour):

I think acrylic suits my art style the most, because its the boldest colour.

Pre: Idea Development

I decided to follow the 'Grass isn't greener' story. Heres the basic idea:

-Nurse Jenny was unhappy with her current situation working in hospital
-After years of consideration she finally transfers to work on a cruise ship
-This turns out to be worse, as all her patients turn out to be drunk and irresponsible tourists
-When the boat returns she changes back to land
-‘The Grass isn’t always greener on the other side’

Below is a very rough story board for it:

I shall be pitching this idea later. I'm quite nervous because I dont really like this idea very much, it seems to be lacking something? Although, thinking back to some of the Aesops Fables, they were quite short and simply portrayed the moral.

Pre: Story Ideas

I'm still planning some story ideas and have come up with a few story lines:

1. Cruise ship characters decide to race around the world. Boat 1 is worried because he's hungry and falling behind. The people which happened to be on the boats while they decided to go off and have a race don't know what to suggest. A nurse comes up and calms the ship down and gives him some dinner. Later on Boat passes Boat 2, who is sore and run out of fuel. The Boat wins and gets his prize; another swimming pool. When thanked the nurse replies 'slow and steady wins the race'.

2. A nurse working in a concrete tower block shaped hospital. Irritated by everything, everyone and herself. Decides to transfer to work on a cruise ship, to see the world. After a 2 year waiting list she finally boards the ship. It doesn't go as well as she'd hoped. The majority of passengers she saw were sick from alcohol and sea sickness. They didn't appreciate her like her old patients. Plus it was so windy her hat kept blowing off. When the boat returned, she changed back to the comfort of land, but at a better hospital. The manager shook her head and told her ' the grass isn't always greener on the other side'.

3. A bored nurse working on a cruise ship thinks she sees a man over board. This attracts lots of attention. The nurse repeats. the boat passes a human in the water but they are not saved. Luckily another boat picks them up but they report the nurse. The nurse looses her job. 'Dont cry wolf'.

4. Ill passenger hurts their leg but don't want to see the nurse. They fall in the sea and have to be rescued. 'We often despise what is most useful to us'.

5. Nurse tries to help hurt passenger but they fall of the boat and break their leg. 'its useless attacking the insensible'.

6. The world runs low on nurses so they ask to borrow some from the past. use cruise liners to time travel. Nurse refuses to come. works with them to form a nurse plan. 'slow and steady wins the race'.

Pre: Character Designs

Following a character design lecture looking at Preston Blair's technique I created some nurse designs. I also came up wih a slightly better idea! Finallllly!!

My new story idea:

- The world low / out of nurses
- So they go back in time to convince nurses from the 1900s to come to the future. Promising them amazing technology and medical curses.
- My nurse is trained up and assigned to a cruise liner
- Although being blown away by technology and highly qualified she misses her family more than anything

Moral: 'never trust the advice of a man in difficulties' from the Aesops fable 'the nurse and the wolf'.

Pre: Research

I'm still struggleing with my idea, I've decided to add in some bear characters. Fables usually include talking animal characters. Below is a rough drawing of a bear working on the cruise liner. I also started drawing out a storyboard but became bored of my story idea very quickly; so had the bear eat the nurse. This probably wont be my final storyline. Still need to work on it!

Pre: Research

Using my moodbaords I've began trying out the technique in watercolours. Below are my paintings, I didn't have the correct paper on me at the time though.

Pre: Research

I've produced another moodboard about nurses, I can't see how this will be as helpful as my first one but its handy to have.

Pre: Research

For my pre-production project I've been given four words to create a story around. These words are: 'Cruise Liner' 'Fable' '19th Century Art' 'Nurse'.

The main word I know very little about is '19th Century Art', so below is my visual Research moodboard.

I used a lot of artist's work in these moodboards, who I found on this website: http://tr3-yr1-010.blogspot.co.uk/2010/05/naiive-performance-does-something-like.html Out of everyone I looked at, these few below stood out the most:

Henri Rousseau (1844–1910)

Alfred Wallis (1855–1942)

Louis Vivin (1861–1936)

Niko Pirosmani (1862–1918)

Camille Bombois (1883–1970)
